The district implemented a Handheld Pilot Project in conjunction with TIE during the 2003-2004 school year. During the 2002-2003 school year eight teachers were trained in the use of Handheld Computers. Each instructor attended the Handheld Computers in the School Environment free regional workshops presented by TIE and held in Chamberlain. The workshops were presented in three phases: Basic Use, Classroon Integration and Assessment Tools. The district has five more teachers completing the training in 2003-2004.

The project was funded as part of the Consolidated Application Title II Part D-Enhancing Technology Program. The program is part of a major School Improvement Initative in the district.

The objectives of the project are:

  • To use technology to collect, manage, and analyze data to inform and enhance teaching and school improvement efforts.
  • Preparing one or more teachers as technology leaders who are provided with the means to serve as experts and train others teachers in the effective use of technology.
  • Adapting or expanding existing and new applications of technology to enable teachers to increase student academic achievement, including technology literacy.
  • To lead improvements in classroom instrcution in the core academic subjects, that effectively prepare students to meet challenging State academic standards, including increasing technology literacy, and student academic achievement standards.

The district provided classroom sets of handhelds including peripherals and software. Each instructor was provided the resource “101 Great Educational Uses for Your Handheld Computer" and "A Comprehensive Guide to Using Handhelds in Education for Administration, Teaching and Learning”. Each instructor developed a lesson plan utilizing NCRTEC Lesson Planner and implemented the lesson with their students. Lessons and video presentation links are below. Each instructor was awarded a $500 Handheld Implementation Curriculum Development Mini-Grant for developing the lesson plan and participating fully in The Handheld Implementation Pilot Project activities.

In the process of developing an Action Plan for the Project it was determined that a Handheld Acceptable Use Policy be developed. Chamberlain acceptable use policy

The Handheld Project instructors presented a Breakout Session at TIE 2004 in Sioux Falls.
