Elm Valley/Leola/Sisseton/Frederick Consortium

This project began when the palms were not being used in many schools in SD. The Dept. of Labor had funds from a Federal Grant called School-to-Work. Cynthia Rall had shared her plans with several individuals about how Elm Valley school was going to apply for the funds by implementing handhelds into the business fair curriculum that one of the 5th grade teachers already implemented. The other schools were interested in being a part of the project and asked for a collaborative project that also included the business fair curriculum. They applied in the spring of 2001 and were awarded the funds in December of 2001. By spring of 2002 the handhelds were implemented with 175 students, 9 teachers, and 4 districts.

Some of the projects include:
• Fifth Grade students of April Moen’s class in Sisseton will demonstrate through drama, writing, drawing or oral speech presentation “How to Turn Sap into Syrup”.
• Janice Jasmer’s fifth grade students of Leola will observe how energy is converted from one form to another and compare solar energy to traditional heating methods. Energy Conversion
