The Mount Vernon School District wrote a school to work grant from the
South Dakota Labor Department for $91,000. This grant help buy every High
School student and teacher an IPAQ handheld computer, a Stowaway portable
keyboard and a case to store them in. We also used the money to buy a
WideRay Jack to beam documents to multiple students.
Our first year into the project students mainly used their IPAQs to take
notes, write reports, and use it as a scientific calculator and to record
all of their assignments on. Some of our teachers have their students
do all of their homework on the IPAQ and beam it to them the next day
at class. This year we will be buying scientific probes for the IPAQs
that measure motion, heart rate, air temperatures, and PH rate for our
High School Science class. We will also purchase some digital cameras
and expansion packs that allow wireless Internet. We are also looking
at buy some translation programs for our Spanish department and looking
at some online books for our English department. Below are some pictures
of our kids using their IPAQs.
